On June 1, 2019, at Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York, USA, unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua made his U.S. debut against late replacement challenger Andy Ruiz Jr. in one of the biggest upsets in heavyweight boxing history. Coming into the fight, Joshua was 22–0 (21 KOs), while Ruiz Jr. held a record of 32–1 (21 KOs). Joshua started strongly and scored a knockdown in the third round, appearing to be in control early. However, Ruiz responded immediately with fast combinations that stunned Joshua and shifted the momentum dramatically. As the fight progressed, Ruiz’s hand speed, pressure, and accuracy repeatedly troubled Joshua, who struggled to recover and maintain composure. Ruiz scored multiple knockdowns as the champion became increasingly vulnerable.
