#RobertWhittaker secured his second win in as many Fight Island bouts as he claimed a unanimous decision victory over #JaredCannonier at #UFC254. ‘The Reaper’ claimed a razor-thin decision over Darren Till back in July, but was far more convincing against the dangerous Cannonier to potentially disrupt his middleweight title plans. Despite Israel Adesanya practically promising the American a title shot if he could defeat the former champion, Cannonier was nullified from the opening bell. Whittaker, who was knocked out by Adesanya at UFC 243 last year, showed glimpses of his vintage best against Till – but looked definitively back to his best on Fight Island. The Australian was bobbing back and forth and his lateral movement was partially unsettled by Cannonier’s nasty leg kicks. Despite the ‘Killa Gorilla’ looking to chase down ‘Bobby Knuckles’, Whittaker showcased his excellent striking skills and had his opponent hurt badly in the second and third rounds. A head kick visibly staggered Cannonier, but the former US Army soldier proved his resilience to hang on to the final bell. With a swollen left eye and blood dripping from his face, Cannonier looked like he expected to hear the unanimous decision scorecards in favour of his performance. For Whittaker, a rematch with ‘The Last Stylebender’ could be on the cards, considering he has already beaten Till this year. For now, he confirmed in his post-fight interview he wanted to simply go back Down Under and put his Christmas tree up with his children, with no one begrudging the 29-year-old that opportunity.
